The Power of Art for Social Change: An Interview with Poet Dai Moret

May 12, 2023

Daiane (Dai) Moret is a Brazilian interdisciplinary artist and poet whose passion for art as a tool for social change stems from her challenging childhood. Growing up as an only child in Petrópolis, a city in the state of Rio, Dai found solace in her creative pursuits and vivid imagination.

At a young age, Dai wrote her first poem "To The Moon," which was a testament to her love for the written word. At 14, she stumbled upon theater and it changed her life. She found it to be a form of therapy, a way to cope with the trauma of her past and a means to express herself creatively.

Today, Dai is a successful poet who has won the Bankstown Grand Slam twice, an achievement that sets her apart as the only poet to do so. She has also worked for the organization that runs the Australian Poetry Slam and continues to inspire others with her art.

For Dai, poetry is a powerful tool for sharing stories and connecting with people from all walks of life. She encourages aspiring writers to take the time to write about their happiest and most painful experiences, and to never underestimate the power of the page. Reading books and poetry that inspire you is also essential, as is attending open mic events and listening to the stories of others.

Dai's personal journey through the arts has been nothing short of inspiring. As she continues to explore her passions and dreams of publishing a book in Portuguese and English and creating her own play, she reminds us of the healing power of creativity and the importance of sharing our stories with the world.

As a pot once said, "It's really hard to hurt someone when you know their stories." Poetry is alive and thriving, and through it, we can create a more compassionate and connected world.

See a quote below from Dai’s Instagram post:

I’m a two time Bankstown Grand Slam winner. The biggest slam in Australia and the only poet to have accomplished that..
But as we poets say - the winner is always poetry.
Poetry took me to many stages across the country.
It made me heard by 900 people at once. It took me
to tv, to Spotify, to books in Brasil, Australia and Portugal.
It gave me the space to recreate myself. To alchemise pain into power. It made me feel loved and deserving
of that love.
Poetry is my compass, my portal, a mirror.
Today I know, I will never feel alone again because
I have the pen, the page, the mic and a community.
