Spanglish Affirmations

Growing up Latina in Australia, my life has always been a blend of cultures, languages and experiences. As someone with Chilean roots, born and raised here, Spanglish has become more than just a way of speaking—it’s a reflection of my identity. I always say it’s not a trend, it’s the way my brain was able to process both languages simultaneously at home. It’s also a powerful tool that connects me to my heritage while embracing the life I’ve built in Australia.

From a young age, my abuelita Inés taught me the importance of daily affirmations. She would stand me in front of the mirror every morning, even when I was just four years old, and ask me to repeat simple, yet powerful, phrases. “Mijita,” she’d say, “Repite, por favor” : ‘Yo soy valiente. Yo soy hermosa. Yo soy inteligente. Yo soy poderosa.’” Those words became ingrained in me, not just as affirmations, but as truths that I carried with me every day.

Now, as an adult, I continue this practice, blending the languages of my life into Spanglish—Spanish and English—into my affirmations. These words are not just sounds; they are a connection to my inner soul, a way to tap into my ancestral “poder,” and a means to attract “buenas vibras” into my life.

She always raised me to never forgot my heritage “Nunca te olvides de tus raices Latinas”

When I say, “I am courageous” or “Yo soy capaz,” I am doing more than speaking; I am affirming my strength and determination, both from my heritage and the experiences I’ve had growing up in Australia. It’s a daily ritual that grounds me and empowers me, reminding me of who I am and where I come from and importantly carrying the legacy abuelita Ines instilled.

I invite you to incorporate these Spanglish affirmations into your daily routine. Estos son mis favoritos:

  • “I am valiente”

  • “I am intelligent”

  • “Yo soy hermosa”

  • “Yo soy suficiente”

  • “I am courageous”

  • “I am successful”

  • “Yo soy poderosa”

  • “Yo soy capaz”

  • “I believe in me”

  • “yo creo en mi”

Take a moment each morning to stand in front of the mirror and repeat these affirmations. Feel the words resonate within you, and let them be a source of strength and inspiration as you navigate your day.

This practice, passed down from my abuelita Ines, is not just about speaking words—it’s about believing in them and in yourself. It’s a celebration of our dual identities as Latinas living in Australia, and a reminder that we carry the strength of our ancestors within us.

To all my fellow Spanglish speakers, I encourage you to embrace this practice. Let these words be your daily dose of empowerment, reminding you that you are enough, you are capable, and you are powerful—just as you are.
