Jun 14, 2023

Hola familia! I'm super excited to share an incredible story with you today—one that revolves around art, culture, and pure celebration. Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with Ana, a talented Colombian-born artist living in Australia, who has created something truly magical: Mami Watta Collections. This vibrant brand showcases the extraordinary artistry of Latin American indigenous cultures through a collection of breathtaking jewellery pieces. So, get ready to dive into the world of Mami Watta Collections and their upcoming event that promises to be an absolute feast for the senses.

Let me introduce you to Ana Maria Parada, also known as DJ Oroana. She's a captivating woman with a multitude of artistic talents. As a multimedia artist, she's not only a skilled musician and DJ but also an accomplished beadwork and painting artist. Ana's artistic journey began with her passion for painting, which eventually led her to explore the captivating realm of beadwork. Besides her creative pursuits, Ana is deeply involved in the health sector, working with communities and empowering young people in the mental health space. Talk about a true inspiration y mujer poderosa!

Mami Watta Collections. This marvellous venture came to life back in 2017, fuelled by Ana's profound connection with indigenous art and culture. Growing up in Colombia, Ana was always drawn to the incredible works of indigenous artisans. However, during a recent visit back to her homeland, she witnessed the struggles faced by these artisans due to displacement and societal challenges. Inspired to make a difference, Ana connected with a family of artisans and brought their exquisite creations to Australia, forming the foundation of Mami Watta Collections. The name "Mami Watta" holds multiple meanings, symbolising the power and strength of women, indigenous cultures, and the African deity of water.

Each piece carries a unique narrative, inspired by the indigenous communities of Latin America. From the sacred symbols of the Emberá Chami people of Colombia to the ancestral traditions of the Mapuche in Chile, these jewellery pieces embody centuries of history and cultural significance. Through her collaborations with indigenous artisans and partnership with Luz Mila a proud family woman from the Embera Chami tribe, Ana ensures that the stories and traditions are respected and honoured, making the jewellery beautiful and deeply meaningful. By wearing a Mami Watta piece, you become a custodian of these ancient tales, connecting cultures and generations.

Get excited because Mami Watta Collections is celebrating its sixth anniversary with a bang! Ana is organizing an exciting event on the 17th of June, and trust me, you won't want to miss it. This event celebrates the brand's incredible journey and promotes indigenous art, culture, and diversity. The venue? A stunning warehouse-turned-art space called 107, sets the perfect ambience for the festivities. Get ready to feast your eyes on a breathtaking exhibition featuring works by talented artists, including Ana's students and other artisans who have joined the Mami Watta family. And that's not all! The event will also feature a live music lineup of incredible Latinx artists, who use their music and art to preserve and promote traditional arts and culture.

Through this event, Ana hopes to open people's minds to the extraordinary world of beading—a profound art form that goes way beyond just stringing a few beads together. Beading is a complex and time-consuming practice that requires deep self-exploration and a strong connection to nature. By showcasing the intricate beadwork and mesmerising patterns, Ana wants to inspire others to appreciate the artistry and storytelling that goes into each and every piece. But it doesn't stop there. She also aims to foster a sense of profound appreciation for Latin American heritage and the richness of its history. It's like wearing a piece of culture around your neck— que lindo no?!

As we wrap up our journey through the world of Mami Watta Collections, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of Mami Watta in your own life. Embrace the power of diversity, celebrate indigenous art, and honour the stories and traditions that have shaped Latin American cultures.
